Retail Redesign

Rough Idea

Leverage symbols in sketch to build banner ads (sorry)

Goal

Not having to open numerous PSDs just to make a simple update while at the same time improving design consistency

Category

Systems

A far simpler and faster way to update files. Changing a single symbol would cascade to all instances which are already scaled and arranged for the different sizes.

The Situation

Banner ads suck and building them is even worse. Especially when it’s 4:30 and you hear that client just sent over an email saying that four of the seven offers for each of the eight sizes need to be updated and that one offer is changing completely. Hope you have a good playlist. But wait there’s more, because the scariest part is knowing that legal could send over changes on top of client changes.

One solution

A relatively small component library built within sketch that would include layout templates, product logos, type styles, and brand colors. It could of course expand beyond this, though the layouts wouldn't be changing from month to month so most of the work would involve flowing in the relevant content into symbols.

The best part would be that adding that product name or image would only need to happen once

and all of the different sizes would be populated with instances of those symbols. With such a system in place, designers would not only get to leave at 5:00, but would have more time to spend refining the overall appeal of these designs, and less time entering the same prices and logos over and over and over and over and...Another added benefit would be improved design consistency throughout the campaign because the small yet subjective choices each designer was making would no longer be part of the process.

CHALLENGES

Scaling the content for the numerous sizes could be an issue though setting expectations as to how long a headline or chunk of copy could be would greatly reduce the number of times you would have to go in and tweak the templates. Also training teammates in this new workflow and tool would require a bit of time and I strongly believe that education as to the benefits of such a system is key to adoption. Involving teammates in the process of adding new components would be two fold in that they would have what they need, and would feel personally invested in the system. Having more versatile components would also mean fewer library elements that require maintenance.

Moving forward

Adding benefit beyond the creative process would also be great for adoption especially because there is plenty to improve in addition to production.

Building the ads is only a small part of the process.

It would be simple enough to export presentation ready docs straight out of sketch, saving the account/pm teams time and bottles of Advil. Developing an accurate folder structure that builds right out of sketch could also be an improvement.
